I tend to lean toward thinking you're better off with a quicker progression than this, either switching down to 3x5 then 3x3 after a single deload or doing deloads after two consecutive fails instead of three but it was the most recent suggestion from Mehdi/Stronglifts before they removed it from the site/program: You're right - advice has varied over time.
